Lord High Admiral, a cousin of Elizabeth I, who commanded the English fleet against the Spanish Armada (1588). He succeeded to his father's title in 1573 and became Lord High Admiral in 1585. For his role in the Cadiz expedition (1596) he was created an earl and in 1601 he quelled Essex's rising.
