Joseph Petty Howard, Sr. grew to manhood in Monroe
County, Kentucky
and in 1867 removed to Simpson County.
In 1861 he enlisted in the Ninth Kentucky Infantry, in which service
he remained three years and three months.
His father, John W.
Howard, a native of Monroe County, was born 1798, was a merchant and
hotel keeper, and died in 1838. He was the son of Kit Howard, a
native of Virginia, who died in Monroe County. John W. married
Martha Wilson, of Monroe County (born in 1801, now living), and
their offspring are Harriet (Dodson), John W. and Jane (Taylor),
twins, Rebecca (Shields and Goodman), Sarah E. (Dunn), Christopher
C., Mary A. (Chism) and Joseph P. The last named had fair
opportunities for obtaining an education, and is a reading man. He
married, April 11, 1858, Virginia, daughter of Hardin D. and Susan
(Murray) Celsor, of Allen County (born January 15, 1838), and to
them have been born William T., Joseph P., John C. ,James M. (dead),
Samuel D. (dead), Mattamorselous, Mary C. and Thomas T. (dead). Mr.
Howard engaged in the saddle and harness business in Fountain Run,
Kentucky for fifteen years. He is now a farmer, owning 250 acres of
productive land, in a high state of cultivation. He is a member of
the A. F. & A. M., also a member of the Christian Church, and in
politics is a Republican.

Peden, Glasgow Kentucky, Joseph P. Howard was a private in Company A, 9th
Regiment, Kentucky Volunteers (Union Army). Enlisted September 25,
1861; discharged December 15, 1865.

this would have been all of Joseph Petty Howard, Sr.'s immediate family.

Sarah and John, Jr. left Kentucky
for Texas during the Civil War. One can only guess that they wished to keep their slaves since they did have them in Texas. It must have been a bit difficult since their younger brother was fighting for the
North.

My Grandfather left Simpson County, Kentucky at 19 years
of age in 1933 for Cleveland, Ohio. The Group photo is the only time my father saw his Grandfather, John Christopher Howard.
He came by train up to Cleveland to his son's home on W-116th Street, Cleveland where the photo was taken.

This is another Son of Joseph P. Howard, Sr.
William T. (1859-1942) and Sallie (Young) (1862-1931) Howard
They were married, October 08, 1882.
They are buried at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery along
with Joseph Petty Howard, Sr., his wife Virginia H. (Celsor) Howard
and several of Joseph and Virginia's children who died at a young age.
