Trevor Wallace Howard, Actor, born . He trained in London and had a successful stage career until joining the army at the beginning of World War 2. Invalided out in 1944, he turned to films, and sprang to stardom with Brief Encounter (1945), followed by The Third Man (1949) and Outcast of the Islands (1951). His versatile and often eccentric characterizations were regularly in demand for both film and television, with later appearances in Gandhi and The Missionary (both 1982), Dust (1985), and White Mischief (1987).
